Summer Community Festival
Celebrate community, celebrate summer
Join us on the evening of Thursday 9 June for our LUU’s first ever Summer Community Festival. Designed to celebrate the wonderful local Leeds community here on campus, the festival has been created as part of our year-round Liberate LUU campaign in an effort to to build stronger relationships between our students and the local community here in Leeds.
Taking place from 5-9pm, this fun-packed festival is the perfect way to celebrate the end of a long academic year, while building community with the people around us – both students and locals. Come on down to celebrate being part of the Leeds community with us.
What’s on at the Summer Community Festival
We have a great event schedule lined up at the festival that really has something for everyone. We’re looking forward to showcasing what our Leeds students have to offer, including performances from our clubs and societies that celebrate the different cultures that make up our community.
We’ll also be hosting taster sessions on everything from languages and dancing to arts, crafts, photography and spoken word that are open to all. Focused on community-building, there’ll be handy workshops with local organisations, helping students get to grips with matters like neighbourhood relations, moving out and community sustainability.
The night will be complete with an outdoor market providing three hours of fun, food and celebration. Food stalls from around the world will be set up to cater for everyone and provide a taste of culture, whilst craft stalls will give you the opportunity to explore and treat yourself to traditional jewellery and arts.
If you’re into fashion, in celebration of traditional dress from around the world, a Cultural Fashion Show will be taking place in Riley Smith Theatre – with performers, DJs and dancers making it an event to remember.
This is What Leeds Looks Like: Share your photo & story
During – and in the lead up to – this June’s Summer Community Festival, LUU wants to showcase the faces and stories of our diverse Leeds community, both on and off campus. The This is What Leeds Looks Like project has been established to highlight the brilliant range of backgrounds and experiences of the people around us, and to strengthen the bonds within our community through visual storytelling.
To do that, over the coming weeks we’ll be collecting images and stories from students, staff and local people, to create a large photo mosaic and an online showcase of our stories, similarities and differences.
By sharing our stories, we hope to show everyone what Leeds really looks like, fostering better trust and understanding and an appreciation of the rich mix of people within our community.
To get involved, simply fill in the form below before 9 June, or come along to the Summer Community Festival where you can have your photo taken and added to the mosaic.
