Getting Home Safely
Getting home from LUU
Your safety is our priority, and getting you home after a night out at Fruity or a late study session is something we take seriously.
Our free, safe and convenient Night Bus service will take you to your doorstep during term-time evenings. There are also public bus and taxi options, and a safe taxi scheme to help you out even if you don’t have any money on you.
Night Bus
Catch the Night Bus on the ground floor of the LUU building. Head over to the foyer, find the staircase leading to Old Bar, and you’ll see a bus stop in front of our Wall Of Fame. This is where the bus driver will come in to pick you up.
The Night Bus runs to homes within the Leeds Outer Ring Road – this includes areas like Headingley, Holbeck, and even Stanningley. As you get on, the bus driver will note everyone’s destination (within the Outer Ring Road) and create a route for your journey.

Tracking the Night Bus
- Download the ‘Safezone’ app on your mobile device (registration with a @leeds.ac.uk account is required).
- Select the three lines in the top left-hand corner.
- Scroll down and select the ‘Buses’ tab.
- The screen will show a blue map pin; zoom out to see the current location of the Night Buses.
Bus
There are several bus companies with bus routes in and around Leeds. The biggest company is First Leeds, who offer 60 routes throughout Leeds.
Students can buy a monthly, term time, or annual bus pass in advance, or simply pay around £1.60-£2.00 for a journey. Remember to show the driver your student ID when purchasing a ticket to get a discount.
Taxi
Use a registered taxi service to deliver you straight to your front door. We have a partnership with local taxi service, Veezu. If you have no money, simply call Amber Cars and quote ‘Student Safe Taxi Scheme’. A car will be sent as a priority to your location, where you must hand the driver your student ID. Three days later you should visit the Student Union to pay the fare and collect your ID.
- Call Veezu on 0113 831 4004 and quote “Student Safe Rides Scheme.”
- Provide the operator with your full name, email address, and University of Leeds Student ID number. In the event that you do not have your student card or number to hand, please provide a leeds.ac.uk email address. A car will be sent as a priority to your location.
- Reach your destination safely. The University of Leeds SU will cover the fare initially. The driver partner will take you to a Residential Address, Halls of Residence, Police Station or Hospital.
- Visit the Students’ Union within 72 hours to pay the outstanding fare.
Alternatively, many students use taxi apps such as Uber or Bolt, which can also be downloaded on the app store.
Stay safe
Use the SafeZone app to call for help if you are in trouble or feeling unsafe. The app allows you to share your location with the University security team who will help.
After you have downloaded the app, enter your University of Leeds email address, put in your telephone number, and click sign up.
After this, you will have access to the Emergency call, Non-Urgent telephone line, and First Aid call.
