Chris Morris, Union Affairs Officer at Leeds University Union said: “We believe that supporting the People’s Vote March for the Future is important because student voices need to be heard. In the 2016 referendum, LUU campaigned to remain in the European Union (EU) and we respect the result, however democracy did not end on 23 June 2016. The terms of how we leave were not on the ballot.
Over the past two years more information and actual facts have emerged, giving people a more informed view of what Brexit might look like, leaving a vote on the final deal the common sense option to make sure we aren’t left with a deal that nobody wants. Calls for a People’s Vote are growing as the current plan for Brexit continues to lose support in Parliament creating a halfway house plan which benefits no one.
We believe that students would be affected for many years to come with a bad deal, with loss of access to education, loss of earnings and loss of prospects. Since 2016, there are 1.4 million more young people who can vote. Denying them the chance to have their say would be anti-democratic and leave them lumped with a Brexit they did not vote for. So, have your voice heard, take back control from Parliament and join the march on Saturday 20 October to make sure the voice of the students is loud and clear.”
