Better University
Should the University build a paved East-West path through St George’s Field?
This idea was presented by Harry Roberts. The idea passed and has become LUU Policy for three years.
The results are 11 for and 2 against.
“I was delighted to find out that my idea was passed, and I enjoyed hearing the views and feedback from the student panellists. A new path across St George’s field would be of great benefit to staff and students alike, improving the experiences of those who already use the field and providing better access to the field for people with limited mobility. My hope is that the university administration sees the universal need for this scheme and moves forward with its implementation in the near future.” -Harry.
Should LUU have a responsibility to hold UOL accountable to ensure that campus is accessible for students with limited mobility?
This idea was presented by Sabrina Portman Ross. The idea was passed and has become LUU Policy for three years.
The results are 13 for and 0 against.
“It’s empowering to realise the extent and influence students have available to them through processes such as the Better Forums. It’s encouraging, given the current political climate, that accessibility for disabled students is a significant priority at Leeds and I am enthusiastic to see how this policy is implemented going forward.” -Sabrina.
Should the University improve the visibility, accessibility, and maintenance of multi-faith prayer spaces to better support students of all faith backgrounds?
This idea was presented by Kodou Njie-Lamey. The idea was passed and has become LUU Policy for three years.
The results are 12 for and 1 against.
“A student should never feel pressured to prioritise their studies over their faith to be successful. The improved development of multi-faith prayer spaces can make our campus a central place for nurturing a student’s mind, body, and soul. Making these spaces welcoming to students from all walks of faith will attest to the inclusivity and societal awareness which ought to define the University of Leeds.” -Kodou.
Presenting an idea to a panel of students and a live audience is an incredible opportunity, but being on the panel is equally empowering. It’s a chance to lead discussions, share insights and vote on which ideas would benefit the student body the most.
Here’s what some of our panellists had to say:
“It’s great to know that other students are thinking about the same issues as you, and to know that you can propose ideas to LUU for a student vote. Also to know that the student vote matters in policies between LUU and the university.”
“The thinking patterns of people from different academic fields and cultural backgrounds are quite distinct, which is also an embodiment of inclusiveness.”
“I found the experience really informative.”
“It was so interesting to see behind the scenes of the LUU.”
“It was a very engaging, new experience.”
“A great opportunity to see the efforts people are putting into making our Uni experience better and express my own opinions on improvements that could be made.”
“Engaging with student democracy is a valuable part of the student experience.”
“It felt rewarding to have a say in major decisions voted on by the University Union.”
“Enjoyable and Informative.”
“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”
“Very engaging and interesting, really feel like you make a difference. Would recommend.”
“It was a good experience, and great to have a role in improving the university. A well organised and accessible event.”
