What advice would you give to someone wanting to apply to next year’s team?
Don’t worry about it! You might think that you’re not good enough, or you’re weaker in some areas than others – I can assure you that I did too. But everyone is in the same boat, everyone is stressing in the qualification rounds, everyone wants to make the team, but unfortunately there is only 5 places. So, for me, my recommendation is just go and enjoy the process, and you might surprise yourself – as I did.
Vaughan, hailing from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, is a third-year MBChB Medicine and Surgery student and the esteemed team captain. Drawn to Leeds for its prestigious and well-established medical school, Vaughan found a second home in Yorkshire.
Initially aspiring to be a Nuclear Physicist, Vaughan’s passion for quizzing grew from watching every quiz show on TV while growing up. Participating in the University Challenge is a dream come true for him.
A dedicated sportsman, Vaughan represents the university in both hockey and handball. He is also the captain of the Leeds Medics Hockey Club (LUUMDHC). His extensive sporting knowledge, coupled with his love of history, will surely be advantageous during the show. When asked about the team’s strengths, Vaughan highlighted their expertise in medicine and biology. However, the team boasts a wide range of skills, excelling in technology, music, and art.
Eager to enjoy the process and aim for success, Vaughan looks forward to making the most of this incredible opportunity.

Do you have a team name?
Not really. But I wish we could name it avengers. I know it is a bit lame but it’s a fun way to keep the energy light-hearted.
Adiya, originally from Bihar, India, is pursuing an MSc in Biotechnology with Business Enterprise, blending her passion for science with her curiosity about entrepreneurship. Inspired by tales of exploration, moving to Leeds felt like her own adventurous journey.
An avid quizzer since her school days, Adiya has participated in numerous competitions and trivia nights. To her, the University Challenge represents the ultimate platform to test her knowledge.
Adiya’s love for creative writing and poetry will undoubtedly support her during this experience. She is excited to deepen her appreciation of teamwork and explore new learning opportunities beyond her comfort zone.

Do you have a favourite place to take part in quizzes in Leeds?
I’ve only recently arrived in Leeds, so I’d say the libraries since they’re close to my accommodation
Prahalad, an MSc Biodiversity and Conservation student, hails from Chennai, India. He chose Leeds for its cutting-edge research from the Faculty of Biological Sciences. Inspired by a trip to see a coral reef at the age of 10, his passion for the field was ignited.
A dedicated quizzer before arriving in Leeds, Prahalad wanted to push his limits by participating in the University Challenge. His expertise spans sports and history, making him an asset to the team.

Do you think this is an experience you’ll be able to talk about in job interviews?
Without a doubt, it’s a great example of many desirable and unique traits!
Oscar, a BSc Neuroscience student, was inspired by Dr. Andrew Huberman, an American neuroscientist and podcaster. Fascinated by the material covered in these podcasts, he decided to pursue neuroscience at university.
A long-time fan of the show, Oscar has fond memories of watching it every week after school with his parents. Representing Leeds on the University Challenge is a significant honour for him.
Do you think you could represent the University of Leeds on national TV?
Keep an eye on our socials, casting happens after September each year.
