“Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region offer a plethora of activities and places to visit during the summer. My favourite places are Roundhay Park, Leeds Dock and Hyde Park. In addition to Leeds, you can explore other nearby cities to enjoy your time and make wonderful memories.” – Freshta, Wellbeing Officer 2024-25
When summer treats you with sunshine, there’s no better way to spend the day than getting outside. And you don’t even need to go far – Leeds is full of beautiful parks, gardens and woodlands (Roundhay Park is certainly a favourite among the Exec!).
“One of my favourite things is visiting Roundhay Park because it’s absolutely gorgeous and a great place to hang out with friends on a summer’s day!” – Amara, Equality & Liberation Officer 2024-25
“Visit Roundhay Park – a spacious city park, with lakes, woodlands and gardens! It is a very good place to relax, have a picnic or a party, and connect with nature. And it is free!” – Felix, International & Postgraduate Officer 2024-25
“Sitting in Hyde Park in the evening with some snacks, drinks, playing cards and watching the sunset… There are always great vibes as lots of students are in the park playing games and listening to music.” – Lucy, Union Affairs & Communications Officer 2024-25
“One hidden gem to explore in the summer is Woodhouse Ridge. There are so many paths and trails, and some nice hidden picnic spots! Nearby, there’s Meanwood Valley Farm where you donate a small amount (£3) and get to walk around the farm – which is lovely on a summer’s day! There’s also a cute cafe and a gift shop to have a look around.” – Shivani, Education Officer 2024-25
Perhaps you’re in a mood for a more adventurous hike though. Lucky for you, Leeds is surrounded by the gorgeous hills and valleys of Yorkshire which will offer you a refreshing escape to stretch your legs and clear your mind.
Or maybe you want to expand your horizons by visiting a nearby town or a city – there’s many must-see destinations a short journey away.
“I recently visited Yorkshire Dales National Park and York, which are amazing places to visit. In the Yorkshire Dales, you can hike and enjoy stunning landscapes with rolling hills, valleys, and waterfalls. In York, you can explore a historic city with Roman and Viking heritage.” – Freshta, Wellbeing Officer 2024-25
“I enjoy taking day trips by train to local towns including Saltaire and Harrogate. My favourite has been Ilkley where I have hiked across Ilkley Moor before stopping off at the Cow and Calf pub, shopping in the charity shops, and swimming in the best wild swimming spots.” – Lucy, Union Affairs & Communications Officer 2024-25
Back in Leeds, the city is buzzing with culture – from music and art, to food – if you know where to look for it. Grab your friends or go alone and immerse yourself in the vibrant vibes of Leeds – and you’re sure to fall in love with this city.
“I love to go to outdoor terraces with friends, particularly Headrow House and Belgrave, which have spectacular views of the city, and live music.” – Lucy, Union Affairs & Communications Officer 2024-25
“My favourite thing to do in Leeds is visiting the many different museums that we have (that are free!). I love the Leeds Art Gallery because they showcase many Leeds artists.” – Amara, Equality & Liberation Officer 2024-25
“I would also suggest Kirkgate Market – a huge market in the city centre. Kirkgate Market offers everything from fresh foods to crafts, and it is a good place to experience different cultures, find affordable eats, and pick up some food to cook a meal.” – Felix, International & Postgraduate Officer 2024-25
Finally, back here in LUU, not only are we offering events and support throughout summer, but hundreds of clubs and societies eagerly await for you to join them. Take a look at our vast catalogue, get in touch, and find a community to make the most out of your student experience.
“If you’re in Leeds over summer, I would really recommend joining a club. It’s a perfect opportunity to widen your social circle, try something new, and fill your time in a meaningful way. I did this while working over summer a couple of years ago, and now I’m embedded into a club that has massively become part of my identity – I couldn’t recommend it enough!” – Lydia, Activities & Opportunities Officer 2024-25
