An important update on Leeds Ball 2024

We wanted to let you know that we are having to cancel Leeds Ball this year, and instead we are putting on a free Summer Party that will include almost all the events planned for the Ball, with free entry for ticket holders.

Please read on for more information about why we have changed plans, how we’ll refund Ball tickets, and information about the Summer Party.

Why are we changing plans?

As you might know, every year LUU works hard to make sure Leeds Ball is a fun, inclusive,  and importantly, safe event for all students to celebrate the end of the academic year. You might also know that there has been a protest encampment on campus since 1 May, to show solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Leeds Ball usually takes over the campus, with big and complex installations such as fairground rides and stages. It’s crucial that we can set these up safely in order to deliver the experience we promised our ticket holders in a way that’s safe and secure.

We explored many options to make the Ball happen whilst respecting the right of the encampment to take part in peaceful protest, but came to the conclusion the Ball would need to be cancelled. We also know the deep significance that celebrating the academic year holds, and will be absorbing some of the cost of the cancelled event to allow the Summer Party to happen.

Summer Party on Saturday

We know how important celebrating the end of the year is. So that Leeds Ball ticket holders can still celebrate the end of the year, we are holding a Summer Party this Saturday 8 June, 9pm – 4am in place of Leeds Ball. Ticket holders for Leeds Ball will have priority access to a free of charge ticket to this event, and the remaining tickets will be released to the Leeds Ball waitlist.

This event will be held throughout the LUU building, and will include almost everything we had planned for Leeds Ball – including what will now be the biggest silent disco we’ve ever held, a roller disco, neon mini golf, karaoke, Fruity, DJ’s, Life’s A Drag, live acts and more.

Refunding your Ball ticket

As Leeds Ball can’t go ahead as planned this year refunds will be issued to everyone who purchased a ticket  – ticket holders will receive an email from Fixr to confirm when the refund has been processed. Refunds will be processed to the original purchaser via the original payment method. We are working hard alongside Fixr to process these refunds as quickly as possible.

We’d like to reiterate that it is crucial that students, including those showing solidarity for Palestinian people in the encampment, have the right to freedom of expression. We have been supporting the camp by facilitating conversations with the University, and providing daily wellbeing checks – which we will continue to do.
