What does Varsity mean to you? Why should other students care about it?
“Varsity is a great way to end the season. It’s a good way to give the guys a send-off before they move on to whatever is lined up next for them. It’s also a good opportunity to compete against someone that’s better than you – it’s nice being the underdog in this scenario.” – Ewan
“It’s an awesome experience for all the boys. To play in front of thousands of people at a big stadium is an opportunity most of us probably won’t get. It is nice for all the sports clubs at the University to get together for a few days, and have a big finale.” – Chris
What does it feel like to be out there on the pitch at Varsity, watched and supported by hundreds of students?
“Being surrounded by the fans is great. It definitely adds to the pressure, but it does give you that added edge to push you to win.” – Ewan
“I think it’s really cool to have thousands of people come together to support you. You can use that atmosphere and the noise to your advantage. It’s such a nice experience.” – Chris
Why is it important to have access to sports clubs at the University? How has it enhanced your student experience, and what skills have you gained?
“Being a student athlete is a great way to get away from your studies. It gives you a little getaway from the books and the computer. I was late when I applied to come to Leeds University, so, once I made the decision, I immediately contacted the club. It was a really nice introduction to the club, but to the University itself, and I was able to have friends instead of having to go in blind.” – Ewan
“Societies in general, not just sports, give you an outlet away from work. Also, I’ve made all of my best mates through playing rugby and going to our socials. Joining a society is the best way to meet new people. People in societies are very, very welcoming. When you come to University, it is a little bit daunting, and societies provide you with this foundation to build upon, which is really nice.” – Chris
