Introduction
Across all faculties, in order to represent your views, most of your School Reps have been involved in:
- EDI committees and contact with various EDI teams
- FTSEC meetings
- SSPF meetings
- STSEC meetings
- Education Assemblies
- Better Forums
- Senate meetings
- Creating and submitting FTSEC reports with updates from your feedback
- Gathering feedback from their fellow students using a wide variety of methods
Faculty of Social Sciences
Reported issues:
- Some timetable issues and clashes: Relevant staff have been notified.
- Struggles with engaging students to gain (School Rep) feedback: Ideas are currently in progress on how to improve this.
- Issues with QR codes: This has been raised to relevant staff and is in discussion.
- Feedback delays: In many cases, this was either resolved or understood as somewhat expected.
Successes:
- Appreciation of well structured exams reported by students in some schools, with reported appreciation of effective preparatory information offered.
- 48 hour exam format in place for some schools was largely appreciated in some cases for their flexibility.
Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences
Reported issues:
- Module specific exam and/or content issues: A number of School Reps across EPS highlighted that their exams had been impacted by question modifications. This impacted a large number of students from multiple EPS schools. Reps and Faculty Officers are working with the Pro Dean to review the quality assurance process to minimise future occurrences.
- Issues with available study space (SCAPE): Issues reported to relevant staff and are being discussed.
- Issues with engaging students in providing feedback to School Reps: Ideas are currently in process on how to improve this.
- Peer mentoring: School Reps have discussed this and would like to work on standardising the peer mentoring offer across the faculty. Discussions are ongoing regarding rebranding to encourage participation along with content guidance and improved communication.
Successes:
- The new ‘bring-your-own-device’ 4k screens and advanced/highly specced computers in the 2.15 lab have been very appreciated.
- In some schools, some School Reps reported feedback that exams went smoothly.
- Screencasts were made available where possible.
- Some students reported high satisfaction rates with their timetables this semester.
- Some students reported high satisfaction with feedback turnaround for some modules in some schools.
- In some schools, informational notes about the experiments were successfully given to lab demonstrators to aid lab processes to prevent any logistical issues arising.
- EDI Café: School Reps have incorporated the role of EDI Reps into their own School Rep roles. The reps continue to work with the EPS EDI colleagues and recently held an EDI Café which helped to share experiences and build relationships.
Faculty of Biological Sciences
Reported issues:
- Module specific issues: Either resolved or in discussion with relevant staff.
- Issues with timetabling/assessment deadlines/feedback: Currently in discussion with relevant staff.
- Some students reported feeling overwhelmed during exam season: Whilst the exam season has now passed, we would like to remind students of the University’s Wellbeing and Support services in addition to LUU’s Help & Support services. We also encourage reaching out to key staff within your School for extra support.
Successes:
- Some students in some schools expressed satisfaction with timetabling and the way that their assignments were laid out.
Faculty of Medicine & Health
Reported issues:
- Timetabling complaints: This has been raised to the relevant staff.
- Some module specific issues with feedback and exams: School Reps have raised concerns at relevant meetings and/or to relevant staff.
- Some issues reported with overlapping deadlines and therefore workload: This has been discussed by some School Reps at various meetings such as FTSECs to continue to try and determine a way forwards.
- Some students reported issues with travel costs whilst on placement: This is in discussion with the relevant members of staff.
Successes:
- The new common room in the Worsley building has been reported as very popular and appreciated.
- Some students reported that they were very happy and/or satisfied with library support and resources provided.
- Some students in some schools expressed that they were happy with certain lecture content and delivery.
Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Cultures
Reported issues:
- Issues experienced with referencing during assignments: Raised at relevant meetings.
- Issues with some students not knowing which members of staff to contact with various issues: Ongoing attempts are being made to alleviate this.
- Technical issues with lectures and some content: Raised to relevant staff.
Successes:
- Various social events and a social committee created to help encourage an integrated environment, including festive drinks!
- Issues with wrong timings for online tests fixed.
- Increased efforts at faster feedback delivery.
- School and Design Swap Shop created.
- QR codes implemented in studios and practice rooms.
- End of Term Support and Social workshop was happily received by students in some Schools.
Leeds University Business School
Reported issues:
- Study abroad students have raised a range of issues: This will be raised to relevant staff and discussed.
Successes:
- Students in some schools appreciated lecture capture, when in place, and online access to key textbooks.
- The use of Padlet was also appreciated.
- Students in some schools appreciated digital aspects of various modules, such as availability of past exam papers.
- Whilst sometimes challenging, students in some schools expressed significant satisfaction with their placements and related tutor support.
- Assessment maps will be given out in Semester 1 next year (academic year of 2024/25) explaining assessment. Reps have also suggested adding key calendar events to this.
- Midpoint reviews have been adopted for this year and students have seen professors take feedback onboard and use it to make changes – much better than previous end of module review – Rep win!
- Careers pop ups are now happening regularly in Maurice Keyworth – in part thanks to Rep feedback. Discussions are currently happening regarding adding Esther Simpson as another career pop up location.
Faculty of Environment
Reported issues:
- Issues with some exams (such as duration): Relevant staff are being notified, and issues are being discussed at upcoming meetings.
- Some students reported having very busy academic schedules: Issues brought up at relevant meetings, and staff have been made aware.
- Delayed feedback for some students: Raised at relevant meetings and is in discussion.
- Some issues reported regarding module specific assignments: These will be raised at SPF meetings.
Successes:
- In some Schools, modules with online elements including smaller and increased interactive groups were particularly well received.
- Students in some schools were happy that their dissertation feedback was received before Christmas, in addition to reporting satisfaction with the way most exams were held.
LLC
Reported issues:
- Issues based on feedback sourced from the previous FTSEC November 2023 included: Concerns over access of the Ziff building, feedback time length, many emails and disconnect between LLC, the University and LUU.
Successes:
- A template has been produced to help with recording updates on the student feedback between school reps and the LLC staff.
- Successes based on feedback sourced from the previous FTSEC November 2023 reports included: Positive experience of career advisors and guidance teams, prompt replies from tutors, and overall reported appreciation of consistent communication between LLC and students.
Glossary
- EDI – This stands for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and is related to the University’s EDI Implementation Plan 2023-2025. Consequently, each School has a form of – or will create – an EDI Committee.
- SSPF – Student Staff Partnership Forum: a meeting for Course Reps and School Reps to meet with staff to discuss any student-based issues.
- STSEC – School Taught Student Education Committee. A meeting to allow School Reps to update the School on what they are working on. Issues and proposals affecting education within the School are also discussed.
- FTSEC – Faculty Taught Education Committee. An informal meeting to discuss student views between School Reps, the Faculty Officer, and the Pro-Dean for Student Education in the relevant Faculty.
- Senate – This is the highest decision making body in the University. It is attended by various Deans of Education and the Education Executive Officer. Faculty Officers provide a report on their Faculty to be discussed at the meeting.
- Education Assemblies – A meeting between your Education Officer and School Reps to discuss issues.
