Earth Day is such an important event as our world faces increasing environmental challenges from climate change, deforestation, air pollution, water pollution and the loss of biodiversity. As these problems derive from human activity, we need to advocate for environmental policies. Sustainability is one of LUU’s core values and we recently hosted Climate Week 2023. We loved seeing so many of you get involved with events such as the Sustainability Careers Fair and the Climate Action Training.
For Earth Day, we are similarly keen for University of Leeds students to join us in advocating for our wider and local environment. This morning we organised a litter pick of Woodhouse Moor and the surrounding area. This was a great way to clean up the environment after 4/20 and to get some fresh air and exercise at the same time! If you want more environmental initiatives in Leeds, remember to vote for a candidate that shares your values in the upcoming Leeds council elections. You don’t need to be a British citizen to vote in local council elections, so if you haven’t already, check your eligibility on The Electoral Commission website and make your voice heard.
This year, LUU is rallying behind the theme “Invest In Our Planet”. This is all about the importance of dedicating our time, resources, and energy to solving climate change and other environmental issues. One way that you can help raise awareness and reduce your personal impact on the earth is by making an Earth Day Pledge. Why not try a plant-based diet, use more public transport, or buy clothes second hand? You can celebrate your green action using the LUU graphic and the #ActsForEarth hashtag.
Our ‘5 things to do this week’ has had a Earth Day takeover. Check it out for some more green ideas.
