Can you tell us a little bit about your sport?
In its purest form, a triathlon is made up of swimming, cycling and running, with multiple distance options and race formats. It is both a challenging, yet rewarding sport which has become more well-known and popular in the UK thanks to the huge legacy created by the success of the Brownlee brothers, who train locally here in Leeds.
Why is triathlon the sport for you, and how did you get into it?
By taking on three disciplines, training is varied and exciting. I began triathlon at the age of eight, after joining my local swim club. My three older siblings all took part in competitive triathlon and it was natural for me to follow in their footsteps.
What does Varsity mean to you?
This year, we are using BUCS Sprint Triathlon as our Varsity event which makes it an even bigger race to kick-start the 2022 Triathlon season. We’ve got a large team heading down to Tetbury, near Gloucester and we’re hoping for some top performances.
How are you and the team feeling about the event?
With Varsity also being a BUCS event, there will definitely more nerves on race day. However, because it is early on in the season, the team will hope to use the event as a bench-mark to ‘blow away the cobwebs’ and just enjoy racing again.
Who’s the one to watch on your team?
The girls will look to dominate with the likes of Jess Fullagar, Martha Calton-Seal and Katie Rodda all being ones to watch. As for the boys, both Toby Nisbet and Andrew Rolland are expected to be towards the front of the field and scoring for Leeds.
And how will you be preparing for the race?
With the Triathlon season only just beginning, the team have been working hard all winter. It’s now time to perfect the race skills.
