How is working at LUU helping prepare you for your future career / Has your work helped to influence your career ambitions?
Working at LUU is providing me with a range of skills in preparation for my future career. Having worked in human resources (HR) before, I had only ever experienced the administrational side of things. My current role as the Learning & Engagement Assistant in the People Team at LUU has allowed me to gain practical experience in an area of HR which I was completely unaware of before.
What skills has your LUU role helped you to develop that will be useful in securing your future career?
My LUU role has helped me to develop many skills. In my opinion, the most important skill I have been able to develop is my cultural awareness. Working in staff engagement, you learn the value of creating an inclusive workplace in which people from diverse backgrounds are able to feel a part of.
What is it like balancing work and study/research?
At times, balancing work and study can be stressful. It’s essential to be organised and plan ahead. As a part-time employee of LUU, I am able to select shift times that work around my studies, and it gives me great relief to know that I have a wonderful network of support at LUU if ever I am feeling under pressure.
What drew you to work part-time at LUU instead of elsewhere?
LUU is a fantastic place to gain valuable experience in preparation for my future career. Above all, it’s a fantastic organisation in which values are upheld throughout.
What is your favourite part of your role?
Honestly, my favourite part of my role is definitely my colleagues. As cliché as it sounds, I feel like my colleagues are my friends and I could turn to them for help no matter how silly the question might seem. Each shift, they inspire me without fail and it’s clear that LUU is one of the many reasons why they are able to aim so high.
What would you say to students thinking about applying to an LUU job?
LUU is a great place to work alongside studying. You are able to be flexible and choose shifts that suit your academic timetable. Above all, I thoroughly enjoy coming to work and whilst I’m gaining all of this valuable knowledge and practical experience, I am also having fun.
