Climate change is the defining crisis of our generation, and we know that sustainability is really important to our members – in fact, 94.5% of student survey respondents told us they care about environmental issues. That means it’s vitally important that as a representative organisation, the work we’re doing is really visible to our members. At LUU there’s loads of sustainability work taking place throughout the year – some student-facing and some behind the scenes – but we wanted to bring it all together under one big campaign.
That’s why we’ve launched LUU Acts For Earth – the new campaign to keep our students informed, involved, and always improving when it comes to environmental sustainability. By creating a single, wide-ranging campaign that encompasses everything we’re doing to make LUU, the University and the City of Leeds greener, we hope that each and every one of you will see what we’re up to when it comes to the environment, and how you can get involved – ultimately enabling us to make a bigger impact as a community.
How you can live more sustainably
We also want to empower our students to make changes to their own lives, providing the information and resources they need to make more conscious and informed decisions. And in true LUU style, it’s crucial to make it fun as well.
To make that happen, we’ve got LUU set up on Giki Zero, a handy tool that calculates your carbon footprint before suggesting loads of different ways to cut it down. You can track your progress and even compete with your friends, helping you make meaningful changes whilst having fun.

Whether it’s a fundamental lifestyle change or something as small as getting oat milk in your coffee each morning, these acts all contribute towards a more sustainable way of doing things. Supporting sustainability on campus
It’s all well and good getting students to make pledges, but it’s also our job to make it easy and affordable for you to make these more sustainable choices on campus. From using local suppliers to pushing plant-based options, we’re already on our ongoing journey towards this across all our services in LUU.
And we’ve got some really exciting news: Chilly’s – the design-led reusables brand you probably already know about – are our new sustainability partner here at LUU. To kick things off, they’ve provided Leeds students with a brilliant 10% discount code to use on their products, which includes reusable water bottles, cups and pots.
Perfect for keeping hydrated on campus, bringing lunch in from home or avoiding the coffee cup surcharge in our cafes, we’re super proud to be partnering with a brand whose mission we back so strongly.
