Cheap eats
- Anywhere in Kirkgate Market: The market has a fantastic range of food stalls from a variety of cuisines, all at brilliant prices. One of our favourites is Vietnamese joint Banh & Mee.
- Humpit: With two spots in the city, including in the Union Building, Humpit is your go-to spot for delicious hummus and pita goodness at great prices. The perfect lunch.
- Oranaise Cafe: This North African restaurant in the heart of Woodhouse is an affordable and delicious place to eat out with pals – try a tagine, mezze or something else off their extensive menu. Vegans are well catered for too.
- Jino’s Thai Cafe: This independent Thai spot in Headingley is a failsafe option for a cheap, cheerful and totally tasty lunch or dinner. It’s affordable enough as it is, but Jino’s have some great offers – plus it’s bring your own booze (with no corkage fee to boot).
- Wok&Go: Another on-campus spot, LUU’s branch of Wok&Go serves up fresh, tasty, made to order Asian dishes that bring together the best of Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian, Chinese and Japanese cuisines.
Affordable drinks
- Terrace: This student bar is a no-brainer for affordable drinks in Leeds, with an abundance of deals throughout the week and a large outdoor terrace where you can enjoy a side of sun with your Margarita. There’s a tasty food menu on offer as well.
- Turtle Bay: This popular Caribbean chain has Happy Hour every single day, where you can enjoy 2-4-1 cocktails and mocktails as well as delicious food.
- Old Bar: Our very own traditional pub is your best bet in Leeds for real ale and other drinks at student-friendly prices. Their food’s affordable too, so a great option for when you’re feeling skint but social.
Heading out with home friends
- Northern Monk Refectory: Your destination for locally brewed craft beer.
- Tapped: Another integral part of Leeds’ beer scene, this microbrewery and pizza place is a foolproof option for entertaining friends.
- BrewDog (Leeds North Street): Play Shuffleboard or arcade games whilst you sip your Punk IPA.
- Roxy Ball Room: Make a whole night of it and add karaoke, ping pong, bowling to your drinks across three great Leeds locations.
- Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen: This popular Leeds spot is a favourite with students for good reason. Drinks, food, events and more, all spread over three floors. Get a spot on the roof terrace if you can.
Places to take your parents
Looking for something a bit fancier? We’ve got you covered. Here are some Leeds restaurants that will make the right impression.
- The Reliance: Foodie parents? The Reliance is the place for you. This sophisticated bar and dining room with an ever-changing menu is bound to be a winner.
- Stuzzi: If Italian is more your thing, why not try some of Stuzzi’s delicious ‘Stuzzichini’ small and sharing plates?
- Heaney & Mill: This Headingley-based restaurant offers great variety, with breakfast, lunch, dinner and a separate Sunday menu available. Choose from classics like risotto and steak – it’s sure to be a crowd pleaser.
- Wen’s Restaurant: This family-owned Chinese restaurant is a real Leeds gem, with a menu that exceeds expectations. Take a look at what The Observer’s Jay Rayner had to say, then pile in and order an array of dishes to share.
- Home: Home Cantonese restaurant serves up authentic dishes with the best quality ingredients and is located extremely close to campus – it couldn’t be more convenient (or delicious!)
Green eats
We’ve already mentioned some great places for vegetarians and vegans, but here’s some bonus options for good measure.
- Bundobust: This meat-free Indian street food restaurant is a tasty way to look after the environment.
- Döner Summer: Grab some vegan junk food, from kebabs to fried ‘chicken’ at this trendy plant-based eatery.
- JJ’s Vish and Chips: Plant-based chippy classics, from classic ‘fish’ and chips to scampi or sausage. What’s not to love?
Date night
- Rudy’s Pizza: This authentic Neapolitan pizza is some of the very best pizza you’ll taste in Leeds. Combined with decent prices and great surroundings, this is a good bet for a successful date night. Or order in via Deliveroo if you’re staying at home.
- Hyde Park Book Club: Not strictly a date night spot, Hyde Park Book Club does brunch, drinks and more, including a limited evening food menu. Head over for reasonably priced drinks, nice independent vibes and a great events programme.
- Friends of Ham: This city centre spot does delicious cheese, charcuterie and craft beer for a romantic date night.
- House of Fu: This ramen bar gets rave reviews about its innovative ramen, rice and gyoza dishes. Its bright interior is pretty great as well.
