1. Improve your academic experience via Reps
There’s a large network of representatives working to make change on behalf of students on their course, in their school or at PGR level. These reps are recruited each year and are the student leaders with the power to change your academic experience for the better – so are the people to go to for complaints about your course or suggestions for your School. Discover your Rep and give them your thoughts, or apply to become one yourself to get directly involved in the decision making.
2. Put forward a new policy at our Better Forums
The Better Forums are how students can formulate official policy at the Union. Covering Better Union, Better University and Better Leeds, these forums happen three times a year and are the perfect way to get involved with democracy at LUU. You can discover more about LUU Policy and get inspired to make change here.
3. Create Rep-led change in other areas of student life
We also have Community Reps, Liberation Coordinators and Activities Exec, who perform a representative and change-making role out in the community, for marginalised groups, and for clubs and societies respectively. Want to change things up? These are the students who’ll help make things happen. And just like our academic reps, you could join the team. Keep an eye out for when Rep vacancies go live throughout the year.
4. Run a campaign
Our Political Engagement Team is here to support you in campaigning for change, whether that’s setting up a new campaign or getting involved in an existing one on a local or national level. Just contact the team to talk about your idea and how they can support you – including helping you to develop your ideas, guiding you through the Better Forums, linking you up with relevant Exec Officers and aiding with research and other tasks. As ever, the LUU team is here to help.
5. Engage with your Exec
The Student Exec are elected by students each year – in the biggest of our series of annual elections – to lead the Union on your behalf. They’re all brimming with their own ideas, but they also want to hear from you. As your elected representatives, Exec members work to improve things for Leeds students, and are always happy to hear your ideas and suggestions. Recent Exec campaigns have included Climate Week as well as a Student Rent Relief campaign during the pandemic – there’s a real variety of things that the Exec works on during their time in post. The Exec also get involved with campaigning on a national scale, including at conferences run by the likes of the National Union of Students. They bring the student voice to decision-making at the highest levels of the Union and University, so if you want your voice to be heard, these are your people.
