Private accommodation – shared houses rented from individual landlords & commercial agencies
Your household is everyone who lives in your shared house, flat, or ‘cluster’ – those with whom you share a kitchen or living area .
Many of our students rent privately from local student housing charity Unipol. Unipol’s properties are all houses and flats, meaning your household is everyone living with you in that property. You can find out more about Unipol’s specific guidance and what they’re doing to keep you safe here.
If you’re renting privately from a commercial agency or housing charity where you have access to communal spaces outside of your flat or cluster, you should ask your provider to clarify the rules for usage of these areas and any implications for what is defined as your household.
University Accommodation - Devonshire Hall, Ellerslie Global Residences and Oxley Residences
These halls are not split into flats, meaning residents will be split into clearly defined groups and given exclusive use of certain communal areas. Your household is this group.
Other University of Leeds accommodation/halls
Your household is your flat or cluster – people with whom you share a kitchen or living area.
Be aware that some halls may also house students from other universities or who are on private contracts. You should check with the staff if any specific rules apply.
Private halls or halls shared with students from other universities
Your household is your flat or cluster – people with whom you share a kitchen or living area.
You should check with the accommodation provider or staff if any specific rules apply, particularly if you have access to communal spaces outside of your flat or cluster such as a lobby, gym or entertainment room.
Students living alone
Your household is you. As a single-person household you are eligible to form a support bubble with another household. See below for further details.
Students living with parents and commuting to university
Your household is those living in your family home.
Students living with a partner and/or children
Your household is those living in your family home.
Please note that the Government’s ‘rule of six’ includes children, unless you meet in groups of more than six to enable shared care of a child (for example you have a family of six and a child from a previous relationship under the age of 18).
Family and friends are allowed to provide informal childcare for children under 14.

House guests & socialising
Under new rules announced on Friday 25 September, people in Leeds and surrounding areas under local lockdown are not permitted to meet with those from other households in private homes or gardens.
You also cannot visit people in homes or gardens outside of Leeds, unless they are in your support bubble.
The Government also ‘strongly advises’ those in Leeds to not to socialise with people from outside their household in public venues in Leeds or elsewhere. If you do, you must adhere to the rule of six.
Support bubbles
A support bubble is where one person who lives alone or only with children forms an ‘extended household’ with one other household. For this purpose, the rule of six includes support bubbles as being a part of the household, so someone in a support bubble with a household of six people may meet them.
However only one support bubble can be formed at a time. So if one member of a multi-person household has formed a support bubble with one other person, a different member of that household cannot form a support bubble with another person.
