Commenting on LUU, a sustainability auditor said:
“Leeds University Union consistently build sustainability into their everyday operations, making it a core part of what they do. Responsibility for sustainability is built into various roles within the union and there is clear leadership.
“This year, they have done some great work on waste reduction in particular, with a focus on going plastic free, reducing blue paper towel use and through the flagship clothes exchange campaign which was a great way to engage students in this area.”
As the LUU building opens back up for a new academic year, we’re looking forward to continuing our commitment to environmental sustainability and building upon our team’s exemplary work so far. Remember, there are loads of ways our members can improve LUU’s sustainability and social justice credentials further – get involved via our Forums process, engaging your Exec Officers, and contacting your Course or School Reps, Liberation Coordinators and more.
Green Impact for Students’ Unions (GISU) is Students Organising for Sustainability UK’s (SOS) flagship sustainability support and awards programme for the student movement. SOS recently spun out of the National Union of Students to form its own dedicated charity.
The award is designed to help unions run effective projects and campaigns to create lasting change around sustainability issues. Green Impact provides a framework and guidance for students’ unions to work on areas such as equality, community, curriculum reform and campaigning, whilst enabling unions to showcase their work and share best practice.
2019/20 marked the 13th year of the programme.
