This Committee oversees our financial processes, our internal audit process and our external audit procedures. It also makes sure we have effective internal controls and looks carefully at any potential risks to the Union.

This committee supervises appointments to the Board of Trustees and their induction and development process. It also reviews any legal issues that affect LUU as a charity or company.

The Finance Committee monitors LUU’s finances, expenditure and budgets. It also scrutinises our financial results, commercial performance and spending.

The Board’s role is to oversee the work of the organisation and set the strategic direction. As a general rule, the Board does not get involved in the political or policy setting side of the union. That is led by the students and officers through our Forums and representation.

Trustees also do not get involved in the day to day running of LUU; that is left to managers and staff.

What the Board does do is make decisions about LUU as an organisation. It makes sure that LUU is well run, that it has enough money to provide the services students want and makes sure that we are on track with our vision ‘Together, we will make sure that every student loves their time at Leeds’.

To help with decision making the Board also has five subcommittees. More detailed information and decisions are made here, and to help us with this, we have external professionals on each subcommittee, along with the trustees. These are people who have significant experience in that field of work so can offer different perspectives and support us with the challenges that we face.

This committee looks at issues relating to LUU staff and staff policy, as well as support for LUU volunteers. In particular, it focuses on things like pay changes, levels of staff engagement, pensions and staff development, alongside programmes of volunteer development and support.

This committee is responsible for overseeing our performance in engaging our members, including through our marketing and communications. It scrutinises results from student market research and considers approaches to member engagement, looking at specific cohorts of students and their needs from LUU.
