Exec Legacy 2022/23
Thanks & goodbye to the 2022/23 Student Exec team
It’s time for the 2022/23 Student Exec team to pass the torch to those who were elected by our student body at the Lead LUU leadership race earlier this year.
This year’s team was made up of six incredible students and graduates – Bethan, Ella, Emily, Haryati, Maria, and Vicky. They worked together and led their own individual campaigns to make student lives better. Like many before them, these officers made real change, and much of it is set to be a lasting legacy, long after they have moved on.
Bethan Corner, Education Officer
“The 24 hour library definitely has to be a highlight to see go ahead. This has been a goal for so many Education officers in the past and I think that’s why I saw so much willingness to get this for students this year. Laidlaw library is now open 24 hours 7 days a week, and it’s been very rewarding to see so many students benefiting from this.”
Ella Williams, Activities & Opportunities Officer
“One of my proudest achievements this year has been working with the Activities Exec. Working with this team of Reps has been very rewarding, and it’s great to see the real changes implemented in student activities as a result of our work. The Reps have helped me keep student voice at the core of the work I do, and together we have pulled off some amazing events and cross-category society collaborations, including Varsity and the Riley Awards!”
Emily Tabern, Wellbeing Officer
“One of my most exciting projects from this year that I got to see become a reality was the first ‘Spring Welfair’. While a lot of my work involves dealing with sensitive topics, and it’s really important that we treat issues surrounding student wellbeing seriously, I also wanted to create something positive. The event brought together representatives from teams working in student wellbeing, both across the University and the local community, as well as all sorts of workshops like tea blend making, pet therapy, soap making, and tote bag painting. It was important to me to create a space for students to showcase their own work and ideas, which manifested in independent creatives selling their work in a mini market, and society-led group sessions.”
Haryati Mohammed, Equality & Liberation Officer
“One of my greatest achievements was the anti-racism campaign – Learning Together: Anti-Racism, Bias and Diversity – I led throughout the year. I enjoyed collaborating with the International and Postgraduate officer, and thought that bringing staff in to participate was pretty special, as the Union is nothing without its staff.”
Maria Papageorgiou, Union Affairs & Communications Officer
“I championed sustainability efforts by lobbying the University for student feedback, restructuring the Sustainability Advisory Board to ensure it allows for everyone to make their voice heard there, and establishing positive relationships with climate activists.”
Vicky Zhuo, International & Postgraduate Officer
“I was honoured to be invited to UKCISA Festival to run a workshop to present LUU’s very own International Student Advisory Board, introducing how ISAB works and the democratic structures in LUU!”
