Can you tell us a little bit about your sport?
It’s the biggest combined university sport with 8 women’s and 6 men’s teams at Leeds. Hockey won every single game at Christie cup across both sections, and hope to take this momentum into Varsity.
Why is hockey the sport for you, and how did you get into it?
I started playing when I was 9 and preferred it over the others I played at the time, mainly for its combination of speed and skill.
What does Varsity mean to you?
A few of us know the opposition quite well, so this is an opportunity to celebrate sport at Leeds in a competitive way, and secure bragging rights in the process. It will also be some of our members’ last games, and we want to send them off in the best way possible.
How are you and the team feeling about the match?
We have played them in the league earlier and whilst we drew then, positive results towards the end of our season have given us the confidence to believe we can go one better this time.
Who’s the one to watch on your team?
It’s hard to choose just one, but I’d have to say Leon Smith for his breath-taking speed and dazzling skills.
And how will you be preparing for the match?
After a long season we’ll be using Easter to rest up, but obviously keeping fit throughout too. When we return to term time training will start again in earnest.
