Festive events at the Union
If it’s a festive night out you’re after, Fruity’s got you covered in December, with two festive Fruitys on before the end of term. On 3 December, the Union is bringing you the Fairytale of Fruity, and for the last Union club night of term, on 10 December Fruity Snowball will not disappoint – who doesn’t want a Fruity Santa hat? Start your holiday season off right by dancing the night away at the biggest student party in Leeds.
In partnership with the University, we also have our festive tent open on the Union precinct. The tent is serving holiday favourites like mulled wine and other drinks, in a super festive environment, complete with lights and a fire pit. The tent will host plenty of events, including the International Winter Festival on Tuesday 30 November, which is set to be a celebration and exchange of the culture of our international students. Night market stalls will be open including international street food vendors and some of our international societies including Mariachi, Folk and Irish Dancing will be performing. Don’t miss out.
The tent is a bookable space, so if you’re interested in holding a society event there, enquire by filling in this form.
The fun doesn’t stop there – LUU’s Night Market is back! Complete with festive stalls including street food, cocktails, craft beer, art and music. Nothing but good food, good vibes and good times. Open on 6 and 7 December, 5-10pm – just show up, it’s free.
Get your skates on with wintery activities
Around Leeds there’s plenty of activities to get you in the spirit. Glide your way into the festivities at the Ice Cube ice rink that has returned to Millennium Square – and if you’re not a pro at ice-skating, there are street food huts and a new Igloo Bar so you can join in on the fun from the sidelines.
Temple Newsam – a historic house on a country estate in Leeds – has lots of events throughout December, including a brand new after-dark illuminated trail through their spectacular grounds, which is running until 2 January 2022. If you’re after some fresh air, a warm wintery drink and a change of scenery, find out more about their events here.
Sustainable seasonal fun at Scream
There’s lots going on at our sustainable dessert outlet Scream this winter. We know it can be hard to stay sustainable during the festive period, so Scream’s providing some fun opportunities to help do your bit and get free treats using the Magic Stamp app this festive period.
Download the app and get your first stamp from the Scream Fridge Bike for an instant reward, then have a go at pedalling our festive bike in the Union Foyer or participate in our Sustainable Swap Shop to earn a stamp towards a free Scream treat. You’ll need four stamps to claim your next reward.
Holiday traditions
If you love traditional carol singing, Leeds Minster are holding a Carol Service on Thursday 2 December at 7pm, where the Choir of Leeds Minster and the Yorkshire Evening Post Brass Band will be performing to help get the city into the festive spirit. Find out more about the service and get your tickets here.
Back on campus, there’s some really traditional British fun taking place courtesy of Pantomime Society, who are staging Romeo and Juliet: The Panto in the Riley Smith Theatre on Wednesday 8 December. Get your tickets now.
If watching Christmas films is more your thing, head to Pyramid Theatre for one of Hyde Park Picture House’s screenings of festive favourites including Home Alone. A classic.
These events are just the tip of the iceberg of everything that’s on in Leeds this festive season. Be sure to check out our What’s On listings for more, plus Engage for the events run by all your favourite clubs and societies. Whatever you get up to, Happy Holidays!
