Amber Cars: Helping cashless students get home safely

We all know that walking home at night isn’t always the safest thing to do, even though it’s often the easiest option when you’re out of cash on a night out. 

Luckily there’s an alternative. We’ve been working with local Leeds taxi firm Amber Cars for more than a decade to bring you the Student Safe Taxi Scheme, enabling you to get home safely if you’re stuck somewhere at night.

The scheme means that should you find yourself stranded after dark, Amber drivers will take you – as a Leeds student – home safely, even if you don’t have any money.

So how does it work?

If you find yourself stuck, you can call Amber Cars on 0113 202 2117 and ask for a taxi on the Student Safe Taxi Scheme account, and they’ll send your taxi as a priority.

Instead of payment, you should leave your Student ID card with the driver, which will be dropped off in the Union building within 72 hours. You can then come along to the LUU Cash Office (on level 1 of the Union building), pick up your card and settle up the fare.

The Student Safe Taxi Scheme doesn’t run 24 hours a day – you will only be able to use it if it’s after dark and you don’t have any money to get home.

If you don’t need to use the scheme or are without cash in a non-emergency situation, it’s also well worth downloading the Amber Cars app so you can pay for your taxi without having cash on you.
