What does Varsity mean to you? Why should other students care about it?
“Varsity is all about people coming together. Obviously, there’s rivalry between the two Universities, but, at the end of the day, it’s all about the community of Leeds getting together to enjoy a great day of sports. It is also an opportunity to enjoy sports you may have never seen before, or don’t engage with usually.” – Eve
“It’s a really nice atmosphere at Varsity. And it’s important to support your University!” – Lara
What does it feel like to be out there on the pitch at Varsity, watched and supported by hundreds of students?
“It’s definitely a feeling like no other. It’s not like being with your team on a regular Wednesday, because you know it means so much more.” – Eve
Let’s talk about what it’s like to be a student athlete! How do you balance it all? What motivates you?
“Since I am doing a STEM degree, which I balance with all the media societies, and being the football captain, people always ask me how I manage it. And I don’t really know! I am quite organised, and it is important for me to keep myself grounded. I am able to lean on friends and team-mates, and it really helps to have the team around me.” – Eve
“For me, doing a sport at the University helps to keep me grounded – it gives me a routine. My degree has fewer contact hours, so it’s nice and helpful to have that structure.” – Lara
Why is it important to have access to sports clubs at the University? How has it enhanced your student experience, and what skills have you gained?
“I think that clubs and societies – especially at Leeds – are one of the best things here. Joining societies was definitely the best decision I made when I came to University, and I joined some I never expected to be a part of. It connects so many people with like-minded interests.” – Eve
“It’s really rewarding. Whenever I talk to my friends or siblings who ask for advice about going to University, I always tell them to join a society – especially a sports club because there’s such a sense of community. It’s a really good way to make friends and to have a sense of belonging. It has also improved my communication and leadership skills, because, when you’re a part of a team, everyone shares the workload, and it helps you feel important.” – Lara
