“I am thrilled about being elected as the next Activities and Opportunities Student Exec Officer at LUU! I’m really passionate about making our clubs and societies as accessible and inclusive as possible, so I’m excited to start work on developing this. The campaigning process was really intense, so a big shoutout goes to all those who took part (including campaigning teams) – everyone should be very proud of themselves!” – Lydia Shale, Activities & Opportunities Officer 2024/25
“It is such an honour to have been elected as your 2024/25 Education Officer! I am still at times processing that this role is mine for the next year. I am beyond excited to represent everyone and make a difference in this position. After three and a half weeks of training, creation, campaigning, and an intense voting week, I can finally take a deep breath and slot back into student life before I dive into the role in June!” – Shivani Gug, Education Officer 2024/25
This was an election which reached high numbers from the start till finish. More than 400 nominations were initially put forward, and the final number of candidates was an impressive 54. The candidates received thorough training and mentoring, where they were able to learn about such topics as campaigning, communicating, and smart goal setting. Candidates were also provided with an access to the digital hub Helix, as well as with wellbeing spaces and activities. It was very exciting to see the candidates’ creativity across their statements, posters, banners and slogans, and the campus was buzzing with passion throughout the campaigning weeks.
“I am so grateful for all the support from students and my campaign team! Talking to students and staff during the campaign and voting week has given me more of a drive to make the Union and University a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all! I can’t wait to get started and work closely with the team.” – Amara Relf, Equality & Liberation Officer 2024/25
When it came to voting, the University of Leeds students really stepped up and had their say. 9,136 unique votes were cast, which is equal to a 27% turnout, representing a 16% increase from last year. In total, 82,626 votes were cast!
“I am incredibly humbled by the trust and support shown by the gallant students at the University of Leeds. As a postgraduate student from Uganda with a humble background, this victory represents a powerful symbol of inclusion for me. I am deeply energised to begin working on behalf of the student community and address their concerns. My primary goal is to create a flourishing environment where all students, regardless of their origin or background, can thrive. Reflecting on the recently concluded campaign, I am particularly impressed by the meticulous, inclusive, and fair election process at the University of Leeds. It was a valuable experience, one that I hope to replicate back in my home country and contribute to building similar democratic practices.” – Felix Ejessu, International & Postgraduate Officer 2024/25
The new Student Exec team will begin their work in summer. Stay tuned to get to know them and what they get up to!
