Shoplifting
LUU's Shoplifting Policy
Our policies relating to shoplifting prevention and management are included below.
Prevention Policy
Our policy at Leeds University Union is to prevent and deter shoplifting from our retail stores, which we do through various methods of customer service and operational best practices.
If you are a student at the University of Leeds and are experiencing financial challenges that lead you to consider shoplifting from our stores, we offer comprehensive support through our Help and Support services and would encourage you to contact our team.
Shoplifter Policy
Theft from our retail stores and threats or acts of violence towards our retail staff are not tolerated at Leeds University Union.
All incidents of theft will be managed by our Leeds University Union Security Team along with support from our Retail Managers. It is our policy to contact the police and endeavour to prosecute or pursue under Civil Recovery any individual that has committed an act of theft from our retail stores.
All incidents of threats, or acts of violence towards our retail staff will be managed by our Leeds University Union Security Team in line with our zero tolerance approach.
LUU retains the right to remove any individual from our premises and to ban further presence on our premises as outlined in our By-Laws section 8 Complaints, Discipline and Appeals.
CCTV is in use throughout our building to promote a safe Leeds University Union community and to monitor the safety and security of our premises. We use our CCTV to assist in the prevention, detection and investigation of crime and to assist in the apprehension and prosecution of offenders, including using images as evidence in criminal proceedings. Read the full policies for CCTV and Privacy to learn more.
All retail staff in LUU are fully trained in all aspects of shoplifter prevention, detection and related procedures. This training is further supported by training in diversity, inclusion and unconscious bias. We aim to treat everyone with respect and dignity regardless of the situation, however if you feel that you have been treated unfairly in our retail stores and wish to raise a complaint, you can do so by raising a complaint through our complaints procedure, a link to this procedure can be found here under Section 8.
LUU is a registered charity that exists to help students to love their time at Leeds. Any theft from our stores directly impacts the finances that we have available to do our charitable work.
